Comfrey leaves (Symphytum officinale) are a traditional healing herb best known for supporting the body’s natural repair processes. Rich in allantoin and other soothing plant compounds, comfrey is commonly used topically to help calm discomfort, soften and moisturize the skin, and support the appearance of healing for minor scrapes, bruises, and muscle or joint soreness. It’s often found in salves, poultices, and infused oils for targeted, external use. Traditionally, it has also been used as a herbal tea to soothe coughs, support respiratory health, and aid digestive comfort.
Common topical uses:
- Bruises and minor bumps
- Mild sprains/strains and overworked muscles
- Dry, irritated skin (as part of a moisturizing salve)
- Minor abrasions (on intact or mostly healed skin)
Contraindications & safety notes:
- For external use only. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which may be harmful to the liver if taken internally.
- Do not apply to deep wounds or punctures and avoid using on infected areas. Because comfrey may encourage faster surface healing, it can potentially trap debris or infection in deeper tissue.
- Avoid prolonged or extensive use over large areas, especially on broken skin.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a qualified healthcare professional.
- Discontinue use if irritation occurs; consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or you have liver disease or are taking medications that affect the liver.
